The recent takeover of Sun by Oracle is not just about Java, and securing Oracle's installed base on Solaris against rival IBM, it is also about acquiring one of its main competitors: MySQL, in terms of installations one of the most successful piece of database software, and open source (OS). It is definitely the case that Oracle + MySQL overtake MS SQL server as number one database provider. It is funny that the business press is overlooking this key strategic element of the take-over!
What will happen now that Oracle has acquired this pirate's haven of OS? One scenario is that Oracle will dim the OS strategy, which will lead to charging money for Java licenses, and charging more money for MySQL services & upgrades, and the like. Another scenario - wiser - would be to bolster the OS strategy of Sun and integrate the philosophy in the service portfolio of Oracle as well. The market of software pirates can be easily won over with KISS OS software products, creating an unprecedented installed bases, challenging Microsoft on all fronts.
