The Dutch CPB (Central Planning/Stats Bureau) states that open source is not persé beneficial. Only in cases of too much dependency on one supplier. The CPB is missing a fundamental point: the internet is based on open standards, and these have won the competition from proprietary networks (i.e., AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy, Minitel, Videotex/Viditel, etc). The same is true with regard to OS on the level of webservers (Apache), databases (MySQL), server operating systems (Linux), etc. etc.
The CPB should look further, and analyze the fundamentals and future of the online economy. It is very clear that it is moving towards open source and open content. This means that it is of the highest importance that Western economies invest in open source and open content, as the future backbone of our digitzing economy.
