The online channel as measured by ICEcat in the second quarter of 2010 has expanded with 142% compared to the same period one year earlier. In this period in 2010, ICEcat facilitated 237.5 million data-sheet downloads (DDs) for products from 3541 different tech brands by more than 10,000 different online channel partners. This means that the online channel has fully recovered from the recession, during which the online expansion was temporarily reduced to double digits.
Netbooks and game software fast growth in online channel
Not surprisingly, netbooks (+425%) are the fast-growth category of Q2-2010, after having been in the top 3 fast growers of Q1-2010 as well. Its growth is actually accelerating, despite or maybe thanks to the successful introduction of the iPad. As soon as a new wave of tablet PCs, a kind of iPad clones, will hit the market, this will definitely impact the category mix of channel partners, and may create some pressure for netbooks.
A one-time worldcup effect has been the quick rise of LCD TVs (+245%). Telephones, mobile accessories and printing supplies are consistent growth categories in the online channel. Game software is again a top 3 growth category.
DELL's channel expansion risks to loose momentum; Fujitsu consolidates its overall top 10 position
DELL (+859%) continues to be a top 3 fast-growth brand, but the growth compared to Q1-2010 (+2233%) starts to top off. DELL's plans to expands its distribution pilots in Europe, are key to continue its fast-growth path. CablesToGo is able to continue its growth pace (+1191%) and Pelikan managed to accelerate (+1094%). Fujitsu is able to consolidate its position in our overall top 50 brand ranking by showing again an above-average growth (+328%). Other brands that are consistently performing above average are Wentronics (+588%) and Trust (+256%).
In the general top 10, also Samsung is like Fujitsu outperforming the other brands. HP maintains its number one position as champion of the channel with still a big lead over runner up Lenovo.
