The common Greek-Democratic roots in the Arabic world

The Arab revolutions are astonishing. They indeed remind us of the fall of communist dictatorships in Central and Eastern Europe, and the fall of dictatorships in Latin america. It all happened in waves.

Sometimes it is said that the Arab world has no democratic background whatsoever. Actually, that is not completely true. The Greek city states had all their periods of democratic rule, even under Alexander the Great, and were spread all around the Black Sea and all over the East and North side of the Mediterranean. Including the Lybian cost.
Of course, Roman, Byzanthine, Arabic and Turkish rule were less enlightened. But, also in case of Europe it took some 2000 years for democracy to return and develop into a full-blown form! A few decades difference in democratic speed are a blink of an eye in the light of History!
