The many overlapping acronyms for product information management

There's a whole lot of confusion in the are of systems for managing product catalogs. They can be called PIM (product information management), PDM (product data management), PCM (product catalog management), CMS (content or catalog management system), PLM (product lifecycle management) and today I learned that they also can be called MDM (master data management system). I'm sure there are a whole lot of other acronyms on the block to confuse and frighten the potential system buyer ;-).

Probably most understandable is to talk about product data, product information or product catalogs and forget about the acronyms. If I have to choose one, I stick to PIM. We use it for Icecat PIM (free open source download), which we developed for product and management of millions of product data-sheets and related multimedia product information
